FAQs
What is a 12AU7 tube used for?
A 12AU7 tube is a miniature dual-triode vacuum tube commonly used in high-fidelity audio preamplifiers, headphone amplifiers, tube-driven spring reverb circuits, and studio microphones to provide clean signal amplification and warmth.
Can I replace a 12AU7 with a 12AX7?
While they share the same 9-pin pinout, they have vastly different gain factors. The 12AX7 has a high gain factor of 100, whereas the 12AU7 has a low-to-moderate gain factor of around 17 to 20, meaning direct replacement will significantly alter your circuit's volume and headroom.
What is the difference between a 12AX7 and a 12AU7 preamp tube?
The primary difference lies in their amplification factor and gain structure. The 12AX7 is designed for high-gain preamplification, while the 12AU7 offers lower gain with superior clean headroom and a smoother, more transparent frequency response.
