Description
The Newport Fasteners 1/4-20 x 5 Inch Carriage Bolts are premium-grade fasteners engineered for heavy-duty metal-to-wood and wood-to-wood applications. Manufactured to strict ASME B18.5 specifications using high-grade 18-8 (304) stainless steel, these fully threaded fasteners offer outstanding corrosion resistance for outdoor, marine, and high-moisture environments.
Each bolt features a smooth, domed round mushroom head paired with a precise square neck underneath. When inserted into a square hole or pulled firmly into timber, the square neck bites into the material to lock the bolt securely in place.
This self-locking mechanism prevents the fastener from spinning during assembly, allowing for easy installation using a single wrench or socket from the nut side. Ideal for constructing decks, docks, wooden structures, metal framing, and secure fencing, this 50-piece pack provides exceptional strength and structural reliability for demanding hardware and DIY projects.
How to use
- Drill a 1/4 inch hole through the materials to be joined.
- Insert the carriage bolt from the smooth outer side and tap lightly with a hammer to seat the square neck into the timber or square hole.
- Place a washer and nut on the exposed threaded end on the opposite side, then tighten securely using a wrench or socket.

FAQs
What are the dimensions of a 1/4-20 bolt?
A 1/4-20 bolt has a major thread diameter of 1/4 inch and a thread pitch of 20 threads per inch (coarse thread). This specific bolt measures 5 inches in total length from beneath the domed head to the tip.
What is a square neck bolt?
A square neck bolt, commonly called a carriage bolt, features a square section directly underneath its smooth round head. This square neck locks into wood or square metal cutouts to stop the bolt from rotating when tightening the nut.
What size hole for 1/4 carriage bolt?
A standard 1/4 inch drilled hole is recommended for a 1/4 inch carriage bolt. The tight fit allows the square neck to bite firmly into the material when tapped into place, providing maximum holding power.
