Records fine. Picks up AM. Sounds fine on AM without hiss and garble.
Ok, this little device is indeed fairly cool.Pros:The main reason I acquired it was to practice sending CW with my iambic paddle, without having to disturb my radio setup. You don't have to re input settings each time, which was very convenient.I will primarily use the "Free Input" screen, it does exactly what I needed. The "CW Practice" screen is nicely done.Petite sizeComes with a nice carrying case.Value, can't go inaccurate for $60.Cons:In the "free input" mode for sending CW, it occasionally a misses a dit if in the middle of a longer sequence like a "Q" (- - . Either way it is only every once in a while. The "Listen Test" screen was a little confusing to me at first as the sound happens for one letter, while the display is showing the next letter. I plugged the paddle in, and it works without any issues.Built in speaker and headphone outputBuilt in battery, I didn't want to have to plug an external power supply in, the built in battery keeps the extra cables to a minimumInstant on - I noticed that once I set things up, the settings are saved, I can turn the device on by tapping the power button, and instantly start sending CW. It might be that my radio is more forgiving of me being a little sloppy, and this might help me have superior timing? I don't think it is my paddle, as it doesn't happen with my radio, something with the precision needed in the timing perhaps? -). It is probably done that way so you have a moment to guess the letter before it shows it, but I still found it a little confusing.

It still has a couple of flaws, but this version is a major upgrade that I treasure on the whole.
This is a superb radio . . if . If you work with the sleep timer and lockout button you can employ the radio to go to sleep in bed. MW is incredibly decent, but AGC (automatic gain control) can be slow maximizing the signal. For shortwave work with the scan feature, it is incredibly rapid at finding the next tunable station. you understand what its strengths and weaknesses are: namely, it has a dim screen and a somewhat tinny speaker, which makes it not a solid outdoor, bright sunlight radio, and not incredibly solid when around competing noises. Utilize earphones of good grade and the FM stereo is wonderful and everything else is wonderful. This is one of the best pocket radios you can buy for earphone work with. It beats out all competitors. The earphone wire becomes your antenna for SW and FM when plugged in. The quick tune button also will jump 100 kHz on MW (ie 600, 700, 800 etc.), and 1 mHz on FM (I.e. This radio is marvelous at tuning in FM stations. 89, 90, 91). Also, there is a quick tune button that jumps to the next shortwave band. . . .

That it can play music from most of my wireless equipment.
First off the main reason I got this receiver for the 70 dollars that I had available when it was for sale around Black Friday was its reviews. Its AM is good but the shortwave needs a 30 foot antenna to get fair reception. As far as the DX 286 I say go for it and try it out versus your other receivers and you will be pleasantly surprised by the receive and the ergonomics are ok as adequately just that everyone has their own preferences. The same goes for dozens of other stations like Radio Romania, Voice of Turkey, BBC, China Radio International, Korea Broadcasting System, Radio Japan on 11735 khz from France at midnight which is beamed to Africa and Europe, etc. This radio is a keeper and rather soon I intend on buying a handful of them because they are a good bargain even at the regular rate of 79 USD. That said I got it out of the box about a month or so ago and was able to find another battery because the original battery was not shipped with the radio. What the Qodosen DX 286 offers as far as receive sensitivity is outstanding and just obviously as solid as my AM/MW radio that I can hear stations up and down the band late at night on the sharp channel frequencies as adequately as other frequencies in the AM Band. Fine value, good reception, the ergonomics and design is decent, the antenna is small but the powerful receive makes up for the change in antenna length.I was all in all impressed with this radio and I think if you know your radios which I have over 40 years of Shortwave encounter this ranks up there with the finest receivers including stalwarts like the Sony 7600 and 2001D but also the newer receivers like the Tecsun various models although I have not tried out the PL 990 Tecsun and Tecsun H501 yet. I didn't want to mess with sending behind the parcel as a quick fix was available.Anyway, I charged up the battery in the receiver and one morning took it outside as my house has a small noise floor so I went across the street to the local park where there is no noise floor other than what naturally exists in nature. I have a Sangean ATS 405 that I paid 70 dollars for a couple of years ago but its quite deaf despite being designed for shortwave radio. Fortunately I had other batteries that I had stocked up on to replace the battery that should have been with the package. The receive sensitivity of the Qodosen DX 286 far outweighed what I expected. Qodosen needs to fix that trouble where every radio gets shipped out with a battery in it since mine didn't. FM band capability was quite fine as well as I was easily hearing stations in a 50 to 75 mile radius with decent clarity.SW entirely blew my mind as Radio Cairo despite its scratchy distorted overmodulated audio was booming into my location in Indiana like a local station on afternoon around 2130 UTC or 430 PM Local time. I've had some nice radios such as the Tecsun PL-880, Tecsun PL-330, Tecsun PL-368, Tecsun PL-365. The same for the following morning when I could easily hear Radio Thailand World Support on 9385 Khz with extremely little scratching or bending from its transmitter site some 8500 miles away to the north across the polar regions.
